Managing Imposter Syndrome
Recognise It...
Tackle It
Thrive Through It
Ever wished you could silence that inner voice that keeps questioning whether you’re truly good enough? The one that whispers you’re just lucky, or that sooner or later someone will find out you don’t really know what you’re doing? That’s imposter syndrome talking – and while it might feel powerful, it isn’t permanent. You can learn to recognise it, challenge it, and replace it with genuine confidence built on evidence, experience, and self-belief that lasts.

Can I get rid of Imposter Syndrome?
Your thoughts, your strength... because you can quiet imposter syndrome and replace doubt with clarity and courage.
Imposter syndrome can feel like an unshakable shadow, whispering that you’re not good enough, that you don’t belong, or that your success is down to luck rather than your skills. However – here’s the truth: you don’t need to banish imposter syndrome entirely to stop it from holding you back. Instead, you can learn to manage it, reframe your thoughts, and build confidence so it no longer controls your decisions or self-worth.
The key to moving past imposter syndrome isn’t about never experiencing those nagging doubts again – it’s about recognising them for what they are and choosing not to let them define you.
The first step to managing imposter syndrome is understanding that it isn’t a reflection of reality – it’s a thought pattern. Many of us treat imposter syndrome as an inherent trait, something we have rather than something we experience. But imposter syndrome isn’t a disease or a permanent condition, it’s simply a way of thinking. And just like any thought, it can be challenged and changed.
If you want to stop feeling like an imposter, you have to stop thinking like one. That starts with recognising the thoughts that feed your self-doubt and consciously choosing to reframe them.
How to Stop Thinking Like an Imposter
1. Recognise Your Thoughts, But Don’t Believe Everything You Think
Self-doubt is sneaky because it disguises itself as truth. The next time you catch yourself thinking, “I’m not good enough” or “I don’t belong here,” pause and ask yourself:
- What evidence do I have that this thought is actually true?
- Would I say this to a friend in my position?
- What evidence do I have that I do belong?
Chances are, you’ll realise that imposter syndrome is just a mental script and not in fact a reality. If you are really intrenched in these thoughts though it can help to have someone to help you to unpick them. That is where a coach can make a massive impact.
2. Attributing Success to Luck
Your brain is wired to focus on the negative, which means that even when you have proof of your success, you may still dismiss it. Try this instead:
- Instead of “I got lucky”, say “I worked hard and took the right opportunities.”
- Instead of “I don’t know enough”, say “I am constantly learning and growing.”
- Instead of “I don’t deserve this”, say “I earned this through my skills and effort.”
Shifting the way you speak to yourself rewires your brain over time. When I worked with a recent client we went on a journey over several sessions where we did re-scripting to change the narrative of events into things which could be construed as negative, but were actually stepping stones to real growth and progress. Don’t underestimate the power of changing your language as it can have a profound impact.
3. Separate Feelings from Facts
Your feelings are valid, but they don’t always reflect the truth. Just because you feel like an imposter doesn’t mean you are one. Ask yourself:
- Is this fear based on facts or just my own perception?
- Have I succeeded before in situations where I doubted myself?
You’ll likely realise that your doubts aren’t as factual as they seem. Think about what someone else would say about the situation – or even better, what you would say to someone if it was them!
4. Keep a “Win” Journal
One of the best ways to counteract imposter syndrome is to collect real evidence of your achievements. Why not consider keeping a journal where you jot down:
- Positive feedback you’ve received
- Wins you’ve had – big or small
- Challenges you’ve overcome
When imposter syndrome creeps in, revisit your journal. You’ll have concrete proof that you are more than capable!
5. Talk About It
Imposter syndrome thrives in silence. The more we keep it to ourselves, the bigger it feels. But the moment you start talking about it, you realise – you’re not alone. Successful entrepreneurs, CEOs, and leaders all experience imposter syndrome at some point. Talking to mentors, peers, or a coach about your doubts can help you see them for what they are; just thoughts, not reality.
Will Imposter Syndrome Ever Go Away Completely?
The truth is, imposter syndrome may never completely vanish. But the goal isn’t to eliminate it – it’s to make sure it no longer holds you back.
Think of it like stage fright. Even the most experienced performers still feel nerves before stepping on stage, but they don’t let it stop them from performing. Similarly, you can learn to acknowledge your imposter thoughts without letting them dictate your actions.
With practice, self-awareness, and the right mindset tools, imposter syndrome will become just a quiet background noise rather than a loud, paralysing force.
So… Can I Get Rid of Imposter Syndrome?
You’re More Capable Than You Think! Imposter syndrome might try to convince you that you’re not enough, but you are. The fact that you care so much about doing well is proof that you are invested, capable, and willing to grow.
If imposter syndrome has been keeping you from stepping into new opportunities, negotiating that pay rise, or going after your goals with confidence, now is the time to change that.
